World Coconut Day
- Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare celebrated World Coconut Day on september 2 to commemorate the foundation day of the International Coconut Community.
- India ranks third in production of coconut in the world.
- The production of coconut in the country stood at 21 thousand 207 million nuts during 2020-21, which is 34 per cent of the global production.
History and Significance
- World Coconut Day is observed around the world to understand the benefits of the fruit along with raising awareness about how it can be grown and preserved.
- Several countries around the world specialize in manufacturing items made out of coconut that has become a part of our daily lives.
- This day was first celebrated in 2009 by the Asia Pacific Coconut Community.
Theme
- Keeping COVID-19 in mind, this year's theme for World Coconut Day is ""Building a Safe Inclusive Resilient and Sustainable Coconut Community Amid COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond.""
International Coconut Community (ICC)
- It is an intergovernmental organization of coconut producing countries organized in 1969 under the aegis of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP).
- The ICC Secretariat is located in Jakarta, Indonesia and is headed by an Executive Director.
- ICC Vision is improved socio-economic welfare of farmers and other industry stakeholders in a vibrant Coconut Sector .
