With 3,000 personnel, India's pvt military aircraft production dreams take flight
- Spread over 50 acres in Vadodara’s Harni area, India’s first private military aircraft production facility will employ around 3,000 personnel and indirectly provide a much larger number of jobs to others across the country, according to officials.
Highlights:
Launch of Tata-Airbus Aircraft Assembly Facility:
- A 50-acre facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, was jointly inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi and Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez, marking India's first private military aircraft production site.
- Operated by Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL) and Airbus, the facility will manufacture C295 medium-lift tactical transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Economic Impact and Employment:
- The facility will directly employ around 3,000 workers, spanning from technical staff to support roles, with an Indian-majority workforce.
- It is projected to generate significant indirect employment through a supply chain of 13,000 parts, which will largely be manufactured within India.
Progress and Training Initiatives:
- Scheduled to become operational post-Diwali, the facility will initially see Spanish Airbus personnel for oversight and support.
- 200 engineers from Tata are undergoing training in Spain to prepare for advanced roles in the facility’s operations.
First Aircraft and Future Vision:
- Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced that the first India-made C295 aircraft will be ready in two years.
- Plans extend beyond the initial 40 aircraft for IAF, with aspirations for the facility to become a global hub for manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) in the aviation industry.
Commitment to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in Defense Manufacturing:
- The project aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ vision, aiming to enhance self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
- Airbus has onboarded 37 Indian suppliers and initiated 21 certified special processes for local production, with over 85% of structural assembly and 13,000 parts to be made domestically.
Broader Industry Potential:
- The Tata-Airbus collaboration envisions expanding beyond military production to serve as an aerospace industrial hub, fostering innovation in component manufacturing, assembly, and aircraft services.
