Valsad Road Over Bridge (ROB) on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

  • Indian Railways’ PSU, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) has completed work of dismantling and reconstruction (after making way for DFC tracks) of Valsad Road Over Bridge (ROB) on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor in the state of Gujarat in a record 20 day time.
  • The biggest challenge was busy traffic into Valsad ROB from the Mumbai-Delhi highway.

Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC):

  • It is a high-speed & high-capacity railway corridor that is exclusively meant for the transportation of freight (goods & commodities).
  • DFC involves the seamless integration of better infrastructure & state of the art technology.
  • It will allow for efficient & fast movement of freight (very important for the horticulture sector).
  • This project is under the Ministry of Railways.
  • The project involves the construction of six freight corridors traversing the entire country.
  • Two projects are under construction, and the other 4 are still in the planning stage.

Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC):

  • It is with a route length of 1856 km runs from Sahnewal (Ludhiana) in Punjab and to Dankuni in West Bengal.
  • The EDFC route covers Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal
  • The World Bank is funding a majority of the EDFC

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC):

  • The 1,504-km western freight corridor begins at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh and stretches till the country’s largest container port — Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, near Mumbai.
  • The WDFC covers Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
