Tata Power Solar bags Rs 386 cr battery storage system project at Leh

  • Tata Power Solar Systems Limited , India’s largest solar energy company, have received a “Notice of Award” to build 50MWp Solar PV Plant with 50MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Phyang village in Leh, Ladakh.
  • The commercial operation will be started by March 2023.
  • It will be India's first co-located large-scale battery energy storage system solution.

Battery energy storage system:

  • It is a technology developed for storing electric charges by using specially developed batteries and that stored energy can be utilized at a later time.
  • BESS is best suited for applications that require a fast response time and a high power demand over the short or medium term.
  • A BESS typically utilizes an electrochemical solution.
  • BESS work by converting the DC energy being produced by your solar panels and storing it for later use.
  • The higher your battery’s capacity, the larger the solar system it can charge.

Applications:

  • It will provide energy security.
  • Large battery storages can help India’ electricity grids, given the intermittent nature of electricity from clean energy sources such as solar and wind.
  • Storage systems provide an active reserve of power and energy within the grid and can be used to energize transmission and distribution lines and provide station power to bring power plants on line after a catastrophic failure of the grid.
  • It has small footprint and no restrictions on geographical locations that it could be located in.
  • It can offer high energy and power densities that are suitable for utilizing at distribution transformer level.
  • It can supply power during peak demand.
