- In a recent exchange of views on the state of India's handloom sector, Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi voiced concerns about the Government's handling of this vital industry. she highlighted the challenges faced by handloom workers, particularly the burden imposed by the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
- In response, the Union Textile Ministry outlined a series of measures it has undertaken to support the handloom sector and the welfare of its workers.
Key Government Initiatives:
National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP):
- The NHDP is a comprehensive scheme that offers financial assistance to eligible handloom organizations and workers. This support covers various aspects, including the upgrading of looms and accessories, provision of solar lighting units, construction of worksheds, and product and design development.
Raw Material Supply Scheme:
- To address the challenges related to raw materials, the government has implemented this scheme to ensure a steady supply of essential materials at reasonable costs.
Weavers’ MUDRA Loan/Concessional Credit Scheme:
- This initiative provides financial support in the form of margin money assistance, interest subvention, and credit guarantee fees on loans for a period of three years.
- Insurance and Education Support:
- The Ministry has also introduced measures for the social security of handloom workers, including life and accidental insurance cover.
Virtual and Domestic Marketing Events:
- Recognizing the importance of market access for handloom producers, the government facilitated several virtual fairs, especially during the pandemic, to showcase handloom products to business-to-business buyers and exporters.
