Senate Caucus to push for ‘NATO plus five’ status for India
- Timed with Indian Prime Minister’s arrival in Washington, the U.S. Senate’s India Caucus Co-Chairs, Mark Warner and John Cornyn, will introduce legislation to give India ‘NATO plus five’ defence status.
Senate India Caucus
- A bipartisan coalition that brings national attention to domestic and international issues that affect our economies and security.
- Formed in 2004, it was the first country-focused caucus established in the Senate.
- Functions:
- Promoting a relationship between India and the United States, based on mutual trust and respect
- Increasing close collaboration across a broad spectrum of strategic interests, such as combating terrorism and promoting democracy, economic development, human rights, scientific research, and natural disaster relief.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
- NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which, also called the North Atlantic Alliance.
- It is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty, 1949.
- The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by a non-member external party.
- Head Quarters: Brussels, Belgium
- There are currently 30 member states
- Its objective is to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means.
