Rejuvenation of Polluted River stretches

  • 36th Executive Committee meeting of NMCG approved new projects for rejuvenation of 6 polluted river stretches in Uttarakhand.
  • It has approved the project of “Interception & Diversion (I&D) and STP work of 06 nos. Polluted River Stretches to Rejuvenate Rivers.
  • The project will ensure tapping of a total of 17 Nalas which will be intercepted and diverted to 9 STPs to be constructed under this project

Project detail:

  • The new projects approved were for polluted River Stretches to Rejuvenate 6 Rivers in the Kumaon region
  • The rivers covered will be Bhela, Dhela, Kichha, Kosi, Nandhore, Pilakhar and Kashipur
  • Out of the rest 3 polluted stretches, project of Ganga at Jagjeetpur, Haridwar has already been commissioned and on the remaining two, Namami Gange projects are already under execution.
  • With this project, all the polluted stretches in the state of Uttarakhand have been covered under pollution abatement projects.
  • Important and progressive feature of the project: Comprehensive sludge management arrangements and provision for co-treatment of septage in all these STPs.
  • Progress of action plan of states for polluted stretches are being reviewed by the central monitoring committee.
  • As per the report of CPCB identifying polluted stretches of the rivers in the country, there were a total of 9 polluted stretches in Uttarakhand state and 6 of them were in district Udham Singh Nagar on various tributaries or small rivers.

About Namami Gange Programme

  • It is an Integrated Conservation Mission for river Ganga
  • It has been approved as ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 with budget outlay of Rs.20,000 Crore
  • It has twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
  • The program is being implemented by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), and its state counterpart organizations i.e., State Program ManagementGroups (SPMGs).
  • NMCG is the implementation wing of National Ganga Council (set in 2016)
  • The project is split into three segments or targets
  1. Entry-level activities immediate (for visible impact),
  2. Medium-term activities (to be implemented within 5 years of time frame), and 3.long-term activities (to be implemented within 10 years).
