DistributionHistorically in Ganges River (India & Bangladesh) and Brahmaputra basin. Currently, National Chambal River Gharial Sanctuary is the only significant population area.
ThreatsLarge coastal and riverine projects, fishing net entanglement, human activity disturbances, pollution, irrigation-related water extraction, unregulated dam flows, habitat loss, illegal consumption, and wildlife trade.
Protection StatusIUCN Red List: Critically Endangered, WPA, 1972: Schedule I, CITES: Appendix II.
RehabilitationTurtles released in Haiderpur wetland, Uttar Pradesh, divided into two groups (upper & lower Ganga Barrage). Each turtle fitted with a tracking device.
Turtle Survival Alliance IndiaFocuses on scientific research, on-ground conservation, public education, and awareness campaigns to protect turtles from habitat destruction, illegal trade, and climate change.
National Chambal SanctuaryLocated at Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh trijunction. Important for gharials (fish-eating crocodiles) and 320+ bird species. Proposed Ramsar site.
Namami Gange ProgrammeCentral Government's Flagship Programme (approved June 2014) for Ganga conservation and rejuvenation. Focus on pollution abatement, tributary towns' DPRs, and revival of small rivers and wetlands.
