Over 1.6 lakh Indians gave up citizenship last year
- Over 1.6 lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2021, highest in the past five years, according to MHA.
Key Highlights
- Over 78,000 Indians acquired U.S. citizenship, highest among all other countries.
- Apart from choosing Singapore (7,046) and Sweden (3,754), many have renounced their citizenship for Bahrain (170), Angola (2), Iran (21), and Iraq (1), Burkina Faso(1) in 2021.
- 48 Persons renounced their citizenship for Pakistan.
- India does not allow dual citizenship.
- As many as 362 Indians living in China also acquired Chinese citizenship.
- Individuals renounce Indian citizenship for personal reasons.
