Notify Mhadei sanctuary as tiger reserve within 3 months: HC to Goa

  • Recently, The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court directed the Goa government to notify the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and other areas as a tiger reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act within three months.
  • It directed the state government to take all steps to prepare a tiger conservation plan and forward it to the NTCA within three months of notifying the reserve.
  • It also directed the state to set up anti-poaching camps at strategic locations in wildlife sanctuaries and national parks within six months.
  • It also directed the state to determine and settle the rights and claims of Scheduled Tribes and other forest dwellers and take emergent steps to ensure that there are no encroachments in protected forest areas.

Project Tiger

  • It keeps an eye on 54 tiger reserves in India, which makes up roughly 2.21% of the nation’s total land area.

National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)

  • It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
  • It was established in 2005 following the recommendations of the Tiger Task Force.
  • It was constituted under enabling provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended in 2006, for strengthening tiger conservation, as per powers and functions assigned to it.
  • Tiger reserves in India are declared by the NTCA, constituted with two components.
    • Core Area or Critical Tiger Habitat: Managed as a protected space
    • Buffer Area: Borders the Core area and gets less habitat protection.
