New Ramsar Sites in Bihar- Two wetlands in Bihar,Nagi and Nakti bird sanctuaries, have been added to the global list of wetlands of international importance under theRamsar Convention.<br>- Total Ramsar sites in India now stand at82.
Location and Designation- Located in Bihar'sJamui district.<br>- Both sanctuaries are built onhuman-made wetlandsprimarily for irrigation via theNakti Dam.<br>- Designated as Bird Sanctuaries in1984.
Biodiversity- Home to over150 speciesof birds, mammals, fish, aquatic plants, reptiles, and amphibians.<br>- Habitat for globally threatened species like theIndian elephantand native catfish.<br>- Notable for large congregations ofred-crested pochardandbar-headed geese.
Key Statistics- Asiatic Waterbird Census 2023reported:Nakti Bird Sanctuary:7,844 birds.Nagi Bird Sanctuary:6,938 birds.<br>- Nakti Bird Sanctuary:7,844 birds.<br>- Nagi Bird Sanctuary:6,938 birds.
