  • A child is defined by the Act as anyone under the age of 18.
  • It distinguishes between several types of sexual assault, such as penetrative and non-penetrative attack, sexual harassment, and pornography.
  • In certain cases, such as when the abused child is mentally ill or when the abuse is performed by someone in a position of trust or authority, such as a family member, police officer, teacher, or doctor, it is considered "aggravated."

  • It monitors the status of implementation of the POCSO Act by:
    • Setting up of Special Courts,
    • Appointment of Special Public Prosecutors,
    • Formulation of Guidelines by all States/UTs for the stakeholders for the implementation of the POCSO Act, 2012,
    • Designation and Implementation of module for training of police etc,
    • Steps taken by State Govt. for spreading awareness on the POCSO Act,
    • Collect information and data on its own or from relevant agencies regarding reported cases of sexual abuse and their disposal under the processes provided under the Act.

POCSO Rules, 2020

  • It mandates the Central and State Government to provide periodic training including orientation programmes, sensitization workshops and refresher courses to all persons.
  • To sensitize them about child safety and protection and educate them regarding their responsibility under the Act.
  • As of May 2021: 640 Fast Track Special Courts, including 338 exclusive POCSO Courts have become functional in 26 States/UTs.
