J&K exercise over, EC starts process for delimitation of Assam's constituencies

• The Election Commission recently said it would begin the delimitation exercise of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam.
• The Census figures of 2001 would be used for the delimitation process.

Delimitation in Assam

• Finalization of delimitation of constituencies: then it will be published in the Central and State gazettes inviting suggestions from the general public.
• Last delimitation of constituencies in Assam: based on the Census figures of 1971 by the then Delimitation Commission in 1976.
• Delimitation deferred in 2008 due to security issues: in the four northeastern States of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
