ISA, UNFCCC ink pact to fight climate change

  • International Solar Alliance and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on Friday inked pact at COP26 conference in Glasgow to fight climate change.
  • ISA and the UNFCCC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at COP26 to collaborate and support the Parties in the implementation of ambitious national action in line with global efforts.

About the agreement

  • As part of the agreement, the two institutions will jointly organise a set of activities with the UN Climate Change secretariat to facilitate the implementation of mitigation action in the energy sector, facilitate the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions and Long-term Low Emission Development Strategies.
  • This will also lend support to developing country stakeholders, including SIDs and LDCs, in accelerating the adoption of policy options and approaches for decarbonisation technologies.

About United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

  • UNFCCC entered into force on 21 March 1994.
  • Today, it has near-universal membership.
  • The 197 countries that have ratified the Convention are called Parties to the Convention.
  • Preventing “dangerous” human interference with the climate system is the ultimate aim of the UNFCCC.

About International Solar Alliance (ISA)

  • ISA is an initiative that was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the French President in 2015 at Paris.
  • The overarching objective of the ISA is to collectively address the common challenges to the scaling up of solar energy in ISA member countries.
  • ISA helps in deploying solar applications on a large scale and is now perceived as a key organisation which works towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and objectives of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
