Pilot RolloutImplemented in select cities; by March 22, 2025, over 20,000 e-passports issued in Tamil Nadu.
e-Passport FeaturesContains an RFID chip and antenna storing personal details and biometric data (fingerprints, digital photo). Front cover has a gold-coloured chip symbol.
EligibilityIndian citizens applying for new passports or renewals in select cities. Requirements include proof of citizenship, identity/address documents, no criminal record or travel restrictions.
BenefitsEnhanced data security through PKI encryption, faster immigration via automated e-gates, global compatibility with ICAO standards, reduced fraud, and ease of verification during travel.
Application ProcessApply online via the Passport Seva Portal, schedule an appointment at Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), provide biometrics and documents, and track application status.
AvailabilityCurrently available in Chennai, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Surat, and Ranchi. Full nationwide rollout expected by late 2025 or early 2026.
TechnologyPowered by RFID chips, biometric authentication, PKI encryption, and ICAO-compliant standards for data integrity and global acceptance.
Data SecurityRFID chip data is encrypted and accessible only by authorized readers. PKI technology ensures data cannot be altered without detection and prevents fraudulent cloning.
Travel BenefitsEnables automated e-Gate clearance, instant identity verification, faster processing, and enhanced security at immigration checkpoints.
Travel TipsKeep the passport chip undamaged, use RFID-blocking covers if needed, and verify visa requirements as e-passport does not eliminate the need for visas.
