India, Algeria sign pact to elevate defence cooperation, enhance strategic interests

The MoU aims to bolster mutual understanding and strengthen strategic interests between the two nations.

Official Visit and MoU Signing: General Anil Chauhan visited Algeria from October 31 to November 3, with the MoU marking a significant step forward in bilateral defence ties. According to the Defence Ministry, this MoU establishes a foundation for long-term collaboration in multiple sectors.
Broader Indo-Algerian Relations: The visit aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to deepen relations with Algeria, particularly in trade, education, technology, and defence.

Military Parade and Historic Celebrations: General Chauhan’s visit coincided with Algeria’s 70th-anniversary celebrations of its revolution. He participated in a military parade and other commemorative events on November 1.
Interaction with Algerian Military Leadership: General Chauhan met with senior Algerian military officials, including the Director of the Higher War College. In his address, he highlighted shared values between India and Algeria, noting that the strategic outlook of nations is often shaped by geography and historical experiences.

Reestablishment of Defence Wings: General Chauhan mentioned India’s support for peaceful conflict resolutions and announced the reestablishment of India’s defence wing in Algeria. He welcomed Algeria’s plans to reopen its defence wing in India.
India’s Defence Capabilities: Emphasizing India’s evolving defence capabilities, General Chauhan spoke about India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for the World’ programs. He expressed India’s readiness to share its military experiences with Algeria’s People’s National Army.

This visit builds on recent diplomatic efforts, including the President of India’s visit to Algeria, which underscored both nations’ commitment to deepening political, military, and strategic ties.
