Govt sets target of 175 GW of Renewable Energy by Dec 2022

  • The RE capacity target excludes energy from large hydro projects.
  • Government has also declared a target of installing 450 Giga Watt of renewable energy capacity by the year 2030.
  • A total of 98.44 Giga Watt of renewable energy capacity has been cumulatively installed in the country as on the 30th of June this year, which includes 1.49 Giga Watt of off-grid and decentralised capacity.

India and Renewable Energy

  • India is aiming to attain 175 GW of renewable energy by the year 2022 which would consist of:
  1. 100 GW from solar energy
  2. 10 GW from bio-power
  3. 60 GW from wind power
  4. 5 GW from small hydropower plants
  • India stands at 4th position for overall installed renewable energy capacity in the world.
  • India is among the top three nations in the world which are leading the global renewable energy growth.
  • In the last 7 years, over US$ 70 billion investment has been made in renewable energy in India.
  • India is the third-largest solar installed capacity in the world.
  • India is now in 5th Global Position for overall installed renewable energy capacity.

Initiatives to promote Renewable energy

National Solar mission

  • The objective of the National Solar Mission is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy, by creating the policy conditions for its diffusion across the country as quickly as possible.

Off-Grid and Decentralised Solar PV Applications Programme

  • To promote off-grid applications of Solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems for meeting lighting, electricity requirements of individuals, institutions, communities, commercial and industrial establishments.

Scheme to Support Promotion of Grid Interactive Biomass Power and Bagasse Cogeneration

  • The Programme aims at efficient utilization of biomass such as agro residue in the form of stalks, stems and straw; agro-industrial residues such as shells, husks, de-oiled cakes and wood from dedicated energy plantations for power generation.

National Biogas and Manure Management programme (NBMMP)

  • The programme was started in 1981-82 as the National Project on Biogas Development.
  • It aims to provide fuel for cooking purposes and organic manure to rural households through family type biogas plants
