Global peace index 2021
- The 15th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) was announced by Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) Sydney.
- It publishes a ranking of 163 countries across the world.
Key Findings:
- India has jumped two places from last year's ranking.
- It has become the 135th most peaceful country, while the 5th in the South Asia region.
- Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world since 2008.
- Iceland is joined by other top countries such as Denmark, New Zealand, Portugal and Slovenia.
- Afghanistan is the least peaceful country in the world for the fourth year in a row.
- Afghanistan is followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and Iraq.
- Globally, 14,871 violent demonstrations, protests and riots were recorded in 2020.
- Civil unrest rose 10 per cent globally, driven by the coronavirus pandemic.
- 123 countries have seen a decline in the murder rate since 2008.
Global Peace Index(GPI)
- GPI was founded by Steve Killelea, an Australian technology entrepreneur and philanthropist.
- It is released by the Australian think tank Institute for Economics and Peace.
- It ranks countries according to their level of peace based on three thematic domains-
- Social security and level of security
- The extent of the ongoing domestic and international conflict
- The degree of militarization
