Droupadi Murmu is President of India
- Droupadi Murmu took oath as 15th President of India, and created history by becoming first tribal head of state and second woman to occupy country’s highest constitutional post.
- She is country’s youngest President at 64.
- Since 1977, successive Presidents have taken oath on 25 July.
Key Highlights of her Speech:
- Addressing the nation after being sworn-in, she invoked four tribal revolutions that strengthened tribal contribution to freedom struggle.
- Santhal revolution:
- On June 30, 1855, over 10,000 Santhals were mobilized.
- Leaders: Kanho Murmu, Chand Murmu, Bhairab Murmu and Sidho Murmu
- Revolted against East India Company over oppression by revenue officials, zamindars, and corrupt moneylenders.
- Paika rebellion:
- It is referred to as “original” first war of Indian Independence.
- Kol revolt:
- Kols are tribal people from Chhota Nagpur area.
- Rose in revolt against British in 1831.
- Bhil uprising:
- After British intruded into Bhil territory in Maharashtra’s Khandesh region, tribals pushed back fearing exploitation under new regime in 1818.
- Leader: Sewaram
- Outcome: Brutally crushed using British military might.
- Highlighted 'twin tracks of sabka prayas, sabka kartavya' for India to move forward
- Will serve as a representative of poors, dalits, tribals and backwards
