  • The head of NMCG in a recent meeting, expressed concern over the tardiness of river-cleaning projects being executed in various States under the mission.

  • A variety of projects have been commissioned since 2015 as part of the Namami Gange mission, the costliest and the most critical is in the development of sewage-management infrastructure.

Clean Ganga mission

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India with the goal of addressing the pollution and ecological degradation of the Ganga River.
  • Established on August 12, 2011, as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, the mission is implemented by the National Ganga Council, which was set up in 2016, replacing the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA).
  • The NMCG operates through a two-tier management structure comprising the Governing Council and the Executive Committee.
  • The mission aims to rejuvenate and restore the Ganga River by providing financial and technical assistance for various projects.
  • Its key objectives include rehabilitating and enhancing existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to curb pollution at critical exit points, maintaining the natural flow of the river, restoring surface and groundwater levels, regenerating natural vegetation, conserving aquatic and riparian biodiversity, and promoting public participation in the conservation efforts.
