CITES defines guidelines on trade of rosewood species

  • The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has issued guidelines for its members involved in the sustainable harvest and trade of rosewood specimens.

New Rules for Rosewood Trade: Focus on Sustainability

  • The plan is to boost the abilities of countries managing these precious woods, particularly 27 species identified as needing extra attention.
  • African Rosewood Under Threat: Special focus goes to Pterocarpus erinaceus, or African rosewood, facing a real danger due to excessive harvesting and illegal trade. CITES even recommends some countries temporarily halt trade in this species.
  • The guidelines emphasize stronger "Non-Detriment Findings" (NDFs).
  • These checks ensure international trade doesn't put wild rosewood populations at risk. By making sure trade is sustainable, everyone benefits - from the source countries to businesses around the world.
