World Environment Day- Established in 1972 during the UN Conference on the Human Environment.
- First celebrated in 1973 with the theme "Only One Earth".
- 2025 Host: Republic of Korea with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution".
- India hosted WED in 2018 under the same theme.
Aravalli Green Wall Project- Inspired by Africa's Great Green Wall initiative.
- Aims to restore 1.1 million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2027.
- Focus on afforestation, soil health, groundwater replenishment, and creating an ecological wall to mitigate urban heat islands.
Environmental Threats- Illegal mining and rapid urbanisation causing severe degradation.
Nursery Development Plan- 1,000 nurseries to be developed across 29 districts for large-scale afforestation.
Degraded Land Distribution- Rajasthan: 81%, Gujarat: 15.8%, Haryana: 1.7%, Delhi: 1.6%.
Aravalli Mountain Range- Oldest fold mountain on Earth, three billion years old.
- Spans Gujarat to Delhi (through Rajasthan and Haryana).
- Highest peak: Guru Peak on Mount Abu.
Climate Impact- Guides monsoon clouds eastwards, nurturing sub-Himalayan rivers and feeding north Indian plains.
- Shields Indus and Ganga river valleys from cold westerly winds.
Ecological Role- Acts as a natural shield against desertification and Thar Desert's eastward expansion.
Rivers- Origin point for Chambal, Sabarmati, and Luni rivers.
Biodiversity- Supports numerous endangered plant and animal species.
Threats to Ecosystem- Deforestation, illegal mining, overgrazing, and human settlements causing land degradation.
Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Campaign- Launched on 5th June, 2024 to honor mothers by planting trees in their names.
- Objective: Promote environmental preservation, increase forest cover, and support sustainable development.
World Record AchievementOn 22nd September 2024, 128 Infantry Battalion & Ecological Task Force planted over 5 lakh saplings in one hour in Jaisalmer.
