ANNUAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2021
- The yearly report provides data to track and rank the performance of all UN Member States on the 17 SDGs.
- The 2021 report shows the first-ever reversal in progress since the SDGs were adopted in 2015, driven “to a large extent by increased poverty rates and unemployment” related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2021's edition also includes the International Spillover Index.
- International Spillover Index, is developed by the report’s authors.
- 2021 International Spillover Index- It underlines how rich countries can generate negative socioeconomic and environmental spillovers that undermine other countries' ability to achieve SDGS.
Country-specific findings:

Finland, Sweden and Denmark are ranked first, second and third, but even they are not on track to achieve all for the SDGs by 2030, given major challenges on several SDGs.

The most progress is found in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Côte d’Ivoire; the authors add that some of the countries that progressed most also started from lower baselines.
- On a regional level, the region with the most progress has been East and South Asia.
- Countries with the sharpest declines in SDG scores since 2015 include Brazil, Venezuela, and Tuvalu.
INDIA's detailed Performance analysis:
- India was ranked 120 (ranked ahead of only Pakistan and Afghanistan in SouthEast Asia).
- SDG Index score is 60.1, (Finland's score is 85.9).
- Spill over score is 98.9, (Finland's score is 69.8).
- It is on track or maintaining SDG achievement for Climate Action & Clean Water and Sanitation goals.
- It is Moderately improving in- Good Health and well-being, No Poverty, affordable and clean energy, Decent work and Economic growth, Industry innovation and Infrastructure, Life Below Water, goals.
- It is decreasing in - Quality education, and Life on Land goals.
- It is stagnant in, Zero hunger, Gender Equality, Sustainable cities and communities, Peace Justice and strong Institutions, 'Partnership for the Goals', in SDG goals.
Way ahead:
- Global challenges like pandemics, climate change and biodiversity crisis, require a strong multilateral system to strengthen preparedness and coordinated response.
- SDGS and the Six SDG Transformations can inform a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient recovery from COVID-19.
- 6 SDG Transformations recognise that all SDGS can be achieved through 6 major societal transformations- education & skills; health & well-being; clean energy; sustainable land use; sustainable cities and digital technologies.
