ADOPTION OF HYDROPONICS FARMING
- Recently, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare informed the Lok Sabha that ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticulture Research, Bengaluru has developed a variant of hydroponics “Cocoponics”.
Hydroponics
- It is a method of growing plants without soil in which plants get their nutrients from a mineral solution.
- It is a viable alternative to traditional farming methods enhancing productivity and water use efficiency.
- The method is suitable for growing greens and herbs as they don’t have deep roots.
- At present, this technology is mostly confined to urban farming, rooftop gardening and commercial farming.
Cocoponics or the Soilless Production of Vegetables
- It uses cocopeat as a substrate, which has been found to be comparatively more successful in many vegetable crops.
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
- It was established in 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
- It is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
- It is the apex body for coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture including horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in the entire country.
- It has played a pioneering role in ushering in the Green Revolution and subsequent developments in agriculture in India.
